CURRENT CAUSE

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is the world’s largest nonprofit funder of cutting edge blood cancer research, with a focus on advancement of cures not only for blood cancer but all cancer.  Since being founded in 1949, LLS has invested more than $1.3 billion in cancer research, funding nearly every advancement in blood cancer treatments, many of which have led to the treatment of multiple other cancers, such as breast, brain and prostate, and chronic diseases such as lupus, multiple sclerosis and diabetes.  LLS is committed to providing patients, survivors, caregivers, families and healthcare professionals with hope, guidance, education and support.  As one of the driving forces behind advocacy for policies that enhance patient access to lifesaving treatment, LLS is dedicated to providing patients and their loved ones with the support and financial assistance they need.

Meet LeaKatheryn Harlan, North Carolina native, bulldog momma, and (WE HOPE!) the future winner of Woman of the Year for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. "When I was in seventh grade, a butterfly landed on my lap at my grandmother’s funeral and stayed there the duration of the funeral. My grandmother, my grandfather and my aunt were taken by cancer way too soon. Since that day I’ve known two things; I will helpfind a cure for cancer and butterflies

are my universal sign. Ironically, the day I was asked to join the Man and Woman of the year campaign, I had two butterflies follow behind me. I have been searching for a purpose over the last several years and this seems to be my opportunity. With your help, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is giving me that chance to help cure cancer.

For more than 70 years, LLS has invested over $1.3 billion to advance cancer therapies and save lives. LLS has been relentless in the pursuit of its mission: to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

Unfortunately, every 4 minutes someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer and every ten minutes someone dies from a blood cancer. This is not okay.

This year I have accepted the challenge of participating in the Man & Woman of the Year campaign to benefit LLS. Please help me to achieve my goal of seeing a day when fathers, sons, daughters, and mothers are not lost to these dreaded diseasesTo take you a little deeper into my story, I lost my aunt almost two years ago. She was diagnosed at the age of 19 with her first of four cancers. Her heart became too weak after all the chemo therapies, radiations and stem cell transplant. In 2018, a really good friend of mine, Ashely, was diagnosed with AML Leukemia at the age of 35. She was taken away from her two children to receive the treatment she needed to survive. Lastly, at age 40, my brother in law was diagnosed with CLL. This type of cancer is known to be incurable. They are my reason, my why and my purpose.

My personal goal is to raise at least $100,000 for LLS (in ten weeks) so we can all help save other lives and so I can watch my sister live a life with her husband and Ashley can live to dance at her children’s wedding. Thank you in advance for joining in what is truly a live-saving effort!"
